Well I have to admit I am impressed with my little old self. I have overcome my intimidation with sourdough starter, at least I think I have.
I used a starter recipe I found on Allrecipes.com and let it sit for about 5 days, stirring once a day. I decided to try it today day 6, so I took out what I needed and feed the starter and it is happily sitting on the counter growing again. I will put it in the refrigerator tomorrow if I do not use anymore of it on Sunday.
I found this recipe for Plain and Simple Sourdough Bread on Allrecipes.com. It bakes the bread in the machine but I just used the dough cycle and baked it in a 375 degree oven for about 35 minutes.
This recipe is simple and too the point and boy is it ever good. This bread tastes just like really good sourdough, crunchy outside and chewie inside.
Here is a lovely photo of the finished product and below it is a picture of my sourdough starter before I used some of it.
If you would like to see the recipe please click on the link above.
This bread is just great and I am glad I found a new adventure to go on. I hope you will follow along with me.
Hmm next I think sourdough pancakes or biscuits. Its all about the carbs !!!

This is exactly what I have been waiting for: a bread baker's recommendation on a good sour dough. I am heading over there to check out the recipe right after I finish drooling over your beautiful bread!
ReplyDeleteSUCCESS!!! Congrats!
ReplyDeleteI will have to try this version too!
made my 1st batch of the starter and it did not turn out at all, don't know what I did wrong. But I'm not giving up! Started over again today and hoping for better luck this time. Practice, practice, practice. Got to have me some sourdough bread.LOL.
ReplyDeleteI've told you before, you are my hero b/c of all the fantastic breads you make! This one looks so good. Love sourdough. Thanks for sharing at Church Supper. Have a blessed week, and see you next Sunday!

I'm so excited for you! And it looks perfect to me. You've inspired me to try a starter again. Keep posting starter recipes so when I get mine right, I'll have recipes to try :-)
ReplyDeleteWill you post your starter recipe? There are so many on allrecipes to choose from...and when I take out a cup of starter to make my bread, I add equal amounts of flour and water to make the one cup I took out? so 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup flour?
ReplyDeleteJulie, the recipe I used on allrecipes was just a basic one 2 cups flour, 2 cups warm water, 1 package of yeast. Now if you remove 1 cup of starter you replace it with 1 cup of warm water and 1 cup of flour and a pinch of sugar, a very small pinch.
ReplyDeleteokie dokie thanks, gonna buy my yeast this week :)
ReplyDeleteWe love sourdough at our house. This looks fantastic. Come visit us. We have a terrific crockpot recipe this week.
ReplyDeleteI am so excited about the Sourdough. Your first loaf looks awesome, oh my, I can almost taste it! Thank you so much for sharing with our 1st Anniversary Party at Full Plate Thursday. Have a great week end and come back soon!

Made sourdough hamburger buns this week. They were yummy!
ReplyDeleteCould you please give the step-by-step for making the starter? You said it takes 5 days, but don't you have to do something to it each day? Sorry--I'm a newbie and have no real idea where to start.
