Sourdough Bread Bowls and Everyday Moms Meals Crockpot Broccoli Cheese Soup

This Monday we are going to a carry in, and I wanted to make some kind of soup and have bread bowls so those who choose can have one.

This recipe for sourdough bread is my favorite one so far, its from a book I got from the library.   It has a section for sourdough made in the bread machine.  So I am going to share it.

Basic Sourdough Bread
from Sourdough Baking by Susan Draudt circa 1994

  • 1 1/2 cups sourdough starter
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoon butter or margarine
  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon yeast
Add all ingredients to the bread machine in order suggested by the manufacturer.  I used the dough cycle.  When machine is done either shape into a free form loaf or put in a loaf pan to rise.

I made bread bowls out of this recipe and divided it into 6 rounds shaped like hamburger rolls and let it rise for about an hour.  I baked them in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 25 minutes.

The I let them cool for about ten minutes then made a round cut in the top careful not to go all the way through and took out the bread to made a shell.

Below is my bread bowl before adding the soup.

I need a soup for my carry in that was crockpot friendly so my friend Krista at Everyday Moms Meals, Crockpot Broccoli Cheese Soup, shared here recipe with me.

  2. That looks really good! I love bread bowls. I wish I could find the paddle for my bread machine so I can make this.
